Root & Bloom Norfolk is a Hampton Roads gardening and conservation initiative helping homeowners and small business owners discover how native plants can make our neighborhoods more beautiful, wildlife-friendly, and resilient to the challenges of coastal Virginia.

🌿BUILDING FLOOD-RESILIENCE

Water is part of life in Hampton Roads.

Instead of treating every drop of rain as a problem to move away as quickly as possible, we can design portions of our landscapes to help slow, absorb and manage stormwater.

Consider adding:

Rain Gardens
Create planted areas designed to temporarily capture and absorb runoff to help relieve the storm drains. Place them where the water naturally gathers. 

Native Plants & Trees
Deep-rooted plants can help improve soil structure to prevent erosion.  Tree canopies slow the rainfall rushing into the storm drains. 

Rain Barrels
Collecting rainwater keeps it from ever reaching the storm drains during a downpour.

Gardening in Hampton Roads isn't quite the same as gardening somewhere else.

Our coastal Virginia communities experience heavy rain, flooding, summer heat, hurricanes, nor'easters, clay soils, salt exposure and changing weather conditions. At the same time, our yards can provide valuable habitat for butterflies, bees, birds and other wildlife. We live in a humid sub-tropical climate that experiences frost and freezing in the winter. 

That's why we're passionate about planting for the conditions we actually have.

Native plants are adapted to our region and can provide food and habitat for local wildlife while helping create healthier, more diverse landscapes.

At Root & Bloom, we believe a beautiful yard doesn't have to fight against nature.
